Intelligence Developer

 

Intelligence Developers conduct initial invesitigtive work in the field and fill Intelligence gaps.

Role Profile

Intelligence Developers support the Intelligence process by conducting initial investigative activity. Intelligence Developers develop, plan and pursue a course of action in line with the operational/ strategic objectives of an Operation, seeking and collating overt and covert intelligence to build a comprehensive picture of the criminality or corruption.  Activity conducted may consist of speaking to victims, conducting surveillance and managing collaboration with other Law Enforcement Agencies and organisations. ​In the Police, Field Intelligence Officer is another name for this role.

Standard Responsibilities

​​The main responsibilities for an Intelligence Developer include:

  • Undertaking liaison with specialist law enforcement and government agencies and private organisations.

  • Ensuring the outcomes from intelligence-led activity are in line with tactical and strategic operational objectives.

  • Seeking and collating overt and covert intelligence from human sources, as well as handling these sources.

  • Managing risks associated with covert intelligence, corruption, conduct and complaint matters.

  • Working closely with external partners in the development of intelligence.

  • Conducting surveillance on suspects. 

  • Ensuring all decisions made are rationalised against threat, harm and risk.

Required Skills

Education Requirements

A degree is often not required for Intelligence Developers, instead, Developers are generally required to have Investigative training like the College of Policing's Professionalising Investigations Programme. Previous experience as a Police Officer is generally favoured over any educational qualifications.

Salary Expectations

The salary of an Intelligence Developer is varied. Intelligence Developers will generally be paid somewhere between Intelligence Officers and Intelligence Analysts and will often be paid the equivalent to a Polcie Officer role given many Developers have previously held this role.

  • Police: £22,000 - £30,000

  • Private Sector: £28,000 - £45,000
